The Series 5 has 19 jewels. Howard's own catalog called this 16-size bridge model Railroad Standard and recommended the open-face, lever-setting version for railroad men, with extra five-position adjustment and a jeweled barrel. Keystone sold 19-jewel Howards from the start. The very first ones were built by Waltham under contract, and the Series 5 took over once Keystone's own factory in Waltham was making movements. It came in hunting and open-face versions, and the open-face ones were set either by the crown or by a lever. Early movements were marked No. 5, later ones Series 5, and the bridge carries Howard's arrow through a circle with a triangle inside. The NAWCC's run tables add up to roughly 15,000, most of them open face. Watches left the factory complete, in Howard-signed gold or gold-filled cases, including a dust-proof swing-ring case Howard pushed for railroad use.

What the Series 5 engraving tells you
In Keystone-Howard's 16-size line the Series 0 has 23 jewels, the Series 1 and 10 have 21, the Series 11 is the cheaper 21-jewel Railroad Chronometer, and the Series 5 has 19. Early Series 5 movements have a jeweled safety barrel and later ones a going barrel, and both kept the Series 5 name. Confirm 19 jewels, Series 5 or No. 5, and the five-position marking on the movement.
What to check
Many have lost their original Howard case, and serial charts date Keystone-Howards poorly, so a seller's exact year can be off by years. Enamel dials pick up hairlines.
01Movement: Ask the seller for a photo of the movement. It should read 19 Jewels with Series 5 or No. 5.
02Grade mark: Look on the center bridge in that photo for an arrow through a circle with a triangle inside. That's Howard's mark for the Series 5.
03Setting: Check the photos for a setting lever under the bezel or a pendant-set crown. Railroad men were sold the open-face lever-set version.
04Case: Ask for a photo inside the case back. A factory case is signed Howard and stamped Keystone or Crescent.
05Dial: Check the enamel dial in close photos for hairlines. The Howard signature should be crisp and even.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 11, 2026
Only about 7 Series 5s are for sale and two are parts watches, so the $800–900 band rests on four fixed-price asks and isn't much of a market read. We'd buy the one titled lever set, Series 5 and railroad at $873 delivered, since Howard sold the open-face lever-set version to railroad men, or the 14K gold-filled open-face one at $673 if you're happy to ask how it sets. Confirm 19 Jewels with Series 5 or No. 5 on the movement and Howard's arrow through a circle with a triangle on the center bridge, and treat years in titles loosely, since serial charts date Keystone-Howards poorly. eBay's cards here don't show seller feedback, so check it on the item page.
