Waltham · 21 jewels · 18s · mid-1890s into the 1910s
Crescent Street is the street the Waltham factory stood on, beside the Charles River, and it's one of the company's oldest grade names. Charles Vander Woerd modeled the first Crescent Street movement in 1869, and that 18-size watch was the first Waltham advertised as a railroad watch. When the Model 1892 arrived, Crescent Street became the grade just under Vanguard, starting with the model's eighth production run. Waltham's 1901 catalog describes the 21-jewel version as solid nickel with ruby jewels in gold settings, a double-roller escapement, a hardened and tempered hairspring and a double-sunk dial, and it groups it with the Vanguard as a railroad watch. Pocket Watch Database's count from Waltham's Gray Book puts Model 1892 Crescent Streets of all jewel counts at about 70,000. That makes it a findable railroad watch from the 1890s and 1900s with real history behind the name.
The grade
In the Model 1892, Crescent Street was the grade just below Vanguard. Waltham made it with 17, 19 and 21 jewels, and the 21-jewel version ran from the model's eighth run almost to the end. Some 21-jewel Crescent Streets have two-tone plates, and many of Waltham's 21-jewel private-label railroad watches were built from Crescent Streets. The 1911 catalog also lists a 16-size 21-jewel Crescent Street, which this page doesn't cover.
Two-tone and private-label Crescent Streets are scarcer, so check that the plates match the listing's claim. Like any 18-size watch from the 1890s, expect re-cased movements, replaced dials and hairline cracks in the enamel.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Crescent Street titled lever set, 5 positions, running and gold filled at $413 delivered, near the bottom of the $390–675 most of the about 22 for sale ask delivered. Read Crescent St. and 21 Jewels off the plate and ask whether it sets with a lever, since railroads wanted lever setting by about 1908. A 14K or 10K gold-filled case is a gold layer over base metal, so it doesn't explain a high price, and the $1,435 one titled adjusted 5 positions has nothing else in the title to justify it. eBay's cards here don't show seller feedback, so check it on the item page.
