Waltham · 21 jewels · 18s · 1894 into the 1910s
Waltham launched the Vanguard in 1894 and advertised it as the finest 18-size movement in the world. It was a new design built for railroad men, with a four-part frame where an ordinary movement used seven, the balance set farther from the mainspring, and a double-roller escapement. That design later became known as the Model 1892. After its first five runs Waltham started finishing it in other grades too, and Vanguard became the name of the top grade. The 21-jewel version is the classic railroad Vanguard. Waltham's 1901 catalog lists diamond balance pivots, raised gold settings, a Breguet hairspring hardened in shape, a double-sunk dial and adjustment to temperature, isochronism and five positions. It was made from the very first runs almost to the end of Model 1892 production in the 1910s. If you want an early 18-size railroad watch with Waltham's best finishing, start here.
The grade
In the Model 1892, Vanguard was the top grade and the only one Waltham made with 17, 19, 21 and 23 jewels. Crescent Street sat one step below it. The Gray Book lists many mixed runs (19 to 21, 21 to 23 jewels), and Waltham sometimes changed the jewel count on finished Vanguards, so read the count on the plate instead of trusting a serial lookup. In the 1901 catalog the two extra jewels on the 23-jewel version were sapphire bearings for the mainwheel.
These are well over a century old, so expect re-cased movements, replaced dials and hairlines in enamel. Waltham changed the jewel count on some finished Vanguards and the Gray Book lists mixed runs, so the plate marking matters more than a serial lookup.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Vanguard titled 21 jewels, railroad and working at $370 delivered from Canada, about $70 under the $440–625 most of the about 18 for sale ask delivered. Read Vanguard and 21 Jewels off the plate and ask whether it sets with a lever, since railroads wanted lever setting by about 1908 and the pendant-set and full hunter ones weren't the railroad setup. Skip the two up/down indicator watches at $3,500 and $4,555 unless you collect that variant, and check the case metal in the title, since silveroid is base metal. eBay's cards here don't show seller feedback, so check it on the item page.
