Elgin · 19 jewels · 18s · 1900–1914
When Elgin launched its new 18-size line in March 1901, the grade 240 was the B.W. Raymond that came with 19 jewels. Elgin's 1903 price list offered it open face only, and the factory fitted each one with a double-sunk dial and adjusted it to temperature, isochronism and five positions. It qualified for service on every railroad. Pocket Watch Database counts about 67,500 made through 1914, which makes it the 18-size railroad Elgin you're most likely to find. Elgin kept improving it during the run, so two 240s can differ inside. Movements from serial 11,098,001 on have a double roller, and the balance cap jewel changed from ruby to diamond around 11,023,001, about 1905. The name honors Benjamin W. Raymond, the former Chicago mayor who helped fund the company, and Elgin's first watch in 1867 carried it too.
The grade
Elgin used the B.W. Raymond name across several grades, so check the grade and jewel count, not just the name. The 18-size 240 sits under the 21-jewel Veritas grade 239 and the 23-jewel Veritas grade 214, all on the same open-face, lever-set Model 8. A 1903 Elgin price list also sold a 17-jewel B.W. Raymond in hunting and open-face cases. In 16 size, the 19-jewel B.W. Raymond is the grade 455 on the Model 15.
Double-sunk enamel dials pick up hairline cracks and chips, and many have been replaced or refinished. These movements were often moved into new cases over the years, so the case may be younger than the watch.
Buying guide
The one we'd buy is the grade 240 titled running in a gold-filled case, at $254 delivered, below the band. There are about 25 for sale and most ask $280–600 delivered, with an up-and-down indicator watch at $1,469 the outlier. Ask for the movement serial, since a 240 falls between 8,577,001 and 17,376,000 and those from 11,098,001 on have the double roller, and pass on titles that date it to 1874, decades before the grade existed. Check the seller's feedback on the item page, since eBay's pocket watch search doesn't show it.
