Elgin · 21 jewels · 18s · 1909–1920
Father Time was Elgin's own trademark figure, so putting the name on a railroad grade meant something. The 18-size, 21-jewel grade 367 came out in 1909, open face and lever set, adjusted to temperature, isochronism and five positions, with a double-sunk dial fitted at the factory. It was sold for service on every railroad. Elgin made it until 1920, and Pocket Watch Database counts about 10,300 in thirteen runs. That's a small number next to the 67,500 B.W. Raymond 240s, so you'll see far fewer of these for sale. Some 367s turn up with unusual features. A few were free sprung, with no regulator. Some have a winding indicator on the dial that shows how much power is left. Others were mounted in gimbals and sold boxed. If a listing shows one of those, ask for close photos of the extra parts.
The grade
On Elgin's 18-size Model 8, the Father Time 367 joins the 19-jewel B.W. Raymond 240 and the 21- and 23-jewel Veritas grades 239 and 214. It arrived in 1909, after those 1901 grades, and stayed in production until 1920. This page covers only the 18-size 367, so confirm the grade from the serial number, which for a 367 falls between 13,505,001 and 22,888,100.
Double-sunk enamel dials crack and chip, and replaced or refinished dials are common. Like most 18-size watches, many were re-cased over the years, so the case may not be the one it left the jeweler in.
Buying guide
The one we'd buy is the 1911 grade 367 titled works in a 10K gold-filled case, at $360 delivered, the bottom of the band. There are only about 16 for sale and most ask $350–1,350 delivered, a wide band with a cluster of $1,100–1,800 asks at the top, two of them for up-and-down wind indicators, so read it loosely. Most titles don't name the grade, so ask for the movement serial, check it falls between 13,505,001 and 22,888,100, and treat any title year after 1920 as a mistake. Check the seller's feedback on the item page, since eBay's pocket watch search doesn't show it.

Bidding is at $26 delivered with 5 bids, and the title gives serial 15,032,664, inside the 367's range. It isn't titled running, so we'd stop near $350, the bottom of the band, and budget for a service.
