For most of the Keystone years the Series 0 was the best watch Howard made, and only the presentation-grade Edward Howard sat above it. It's a 16-size, 23-jewel bridge-model movement marked Special Adjustment Five Positions Temperature, and Howard's mark for it on the center bridge is an arrow through a circle with a Maltese cross inside. Keystone built it in hunting and open-face versions, and either could be finished lever set or pendant set, so the same movement served railroad men and dress-watch buyers. The first 23-jewel Howards came from Waltham under contract, with serial numbers just over 1,000,000, and Keystone's own Series 0 numbers later overlapped them, which still confuses listings. Early movements carry no series mark at all, while later ones say No. 0 or Series 0. Howard's catalog numbers give it away too, since a two-digit catalog number always meant a 23-jewel Series 0 in the case named by those digits.

What the Series 0 engraving tells you
The Series 0 is the 23-jewel top of Keystone-Howard's 16-size line, above the 21-jewel Series 1, 10 and 11 and the 19-jewel Series 5. A 23-jewel Howard with an H-prefix serial number is an earlier Waltham-built watch. Confirm 23 Jewels with Series 0 or No. 0 and the Special Adjustment Five Positions Temperature marking on the movement.
What to check
Serial numbers overlap between Waltham-built and Keystone-built 23-jewel Howards, and serial charts date Keystone-Howards poorly, so sellers often give the wrong year. Many have lost their original Howard-signed case.
01Movement: Ask the seller for a photo of the movement. It should read 23 Jewels, and later ones add Series 0 or No. 0.
02Adjustment: Look for Special Adjustment Five Positions Temperature on the plate in that photo. That wording belongs to the Series 0.
03Grade mark: Check the center bridge for an arrow through a circle with a Maltese cross inside. That's Howard's mark for this grade.
04Setting: Check the photos for a setting lever under the bezel or a pendant-set crown. Both are original, and railroad men bought the open-face lever-set version.
05Case: Ask for a photo inside the case back. Keystone sold these only as complete watches in Howard-signed gold or gold-filled cases.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 11, 2026
We'd buy the 1915 Series 0 titled 23 jewels and railroad grade at $1,025 delivered, just under the $1,125–2,025 most of the about 12 for sale ask delivered. Confirm 23 Jewels, Series 0 or No. 0 and Special Adjustment Five Positions Temperature on the plate, and look for the arrow through a circle with a Maltese cross on the center bridge. Four Japan hunter-case listings, most with $224–310 shipping, look like two watches each listed twice, and two open-face ones share one title at $900 and $1,517, so make sure you're looking at a separate watch with its own photos before you offer. Solid 14K gold explains the $5,700–5,800 asks, and eBay's cards here don't show seller feedback, so check it on the item page.

The lowest Series 0 here at $656 delivered, titled 23 jewels in a Keystone 14K gold-filled case, about $470 under the band. A gap that size on Howard's top grade needs a movement photo showing 23 Jewels and Series 0 before you offer.
E. Howard Series 0 23 Jewel Pocket Watch 16S Keystone 14K Gold Filled
Titled 1915, Series 0, Model 1907 and railroad grade, just under the bottom of the band. The case metal isn't stated and it isn't titled running, so ask about both and budget for a service.
1915 E. Howard Series 0 Model 1907 16 Size 23 Jewels Railroad Grade Pocket Watch
A Waltham-built 23-jewel Howard, the earlier contract watch, in solid 14K gold with box and papers per the title. The gold explains the ask, so check the karat stamp inside the case and that the papers match the movement serial.
