When Waltham and Elgin brought out thin dress watches in 1907, Howard answered with a 12-size, open-face bridge movement, and the Series 8 was the best of its three grades. The E. Howard Watch Co., then owned by the Keystone Watch Case Company, started advertising the line in December 1907. The Series 8 had 21 jewels and adjustment to temperature, isochronism and five positions, with the 19-jewel Series 6 and the 17-jewel Series 7 below it. Howard fitted a white enamel dial at a time when Waltham's Colonial line used metal ones, and the stop work sits in plain view on top of the movement. Like every Keystone-era Howard, it was sold as a complete watch in a solid gold or gold-filled case. A 12-size watch sits slimmer in a pocket than a 16-size railroad watch, and the Series 8 puts Howard's top thin movement in one.

The grade
What the Series 8 engraving tells you
In Howard's 12-size line the Series number is the grade. Series 8 has 21 jewels and five positions, Series 6 has 19 jewels and five positions, and Series 7 has 17 jewels and three positions. Confirm Series 8 and 21 Jewels on the movement, since listings don't always get the jewel count right.
What to check
Thin cases take dents, and gold-filled ones show brass at the edges and bow. Later 12-size Howards turn up with metal dials, so judge a dial on its condition and its Howard signature.
01Movement: Ask the seller for a photo of the movement. It should read Series 8 and 21 Jewels.
02Maker name: Read the company name on the movement in that photo. It should be E. Howard Watch Co., the Keystone-era name.
03Case: Ask for a photo inside the case back. A factory case is signed Howard and marked as solid gold or gold filled.
04Dial: Check the dial in close photos for hairlines and a crisp Howard signature. An early Series 8 should have a white enamel dial.
05Crown: Wind and set it by the crown when it arrives. Winding should feel smooth and the hands should set without slipping.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 11, 2026
There's only one Series 8 for sale, an auction titled 1910, 21 jewels and running in a 25-year gold-filled hunter case at $395 delivered with no bids yet, so there's no band to read. Howard built the Series 8 as an open-face movement, so ask whether this one was re-cased, and ask for a movement photo that reads Series 8 and 21 Jewels, since listings don't always get the jewel count right. With nothing to compare it against, set your limit from the movement and case photos before you bid, and check the seller's feedback on the item page, since eBay's cards here don't show it.
