Hamilton · 21 jewels · 10s · 1936–1954
The 921 is Hamilton's 21-jewel 10-size dress movement, made for a slim pocket watch worn with a suit. It arrived in 1936, replacing older 10-size grades like the 21-jewel 904, and stayed in production through 1954. It sits between the 17-jewel 917 and the 23-jewel 923. Hamilton's 1951 catalog describes the 921 and 923 as adjusted to temperature and five positions, where the 917 got three. The 921's extra jewels are at the barrel and the escape wheel, and the 923 adds two more at the pallet fork. It came in named Hamilton models such as the Hardy and the Blaine, the Blaine in 14K solid gold. Hamilton offered personalized dials on its 10-size watches, and companies often gave them as service awards, so engraved presentation cases are common. You set it by pulling the crown, like a wristwatch. It was always a dress watch, so it was never railroad approved.
The grade
The 921 is the middle of Hamilton's three 10-size dress grades, above the 17-jewel 917 and below the 23-jewel 923. The 921 and 923 were adjusted to temperature and five positions, the 917 to three. Confirm the movement reads 921 and 21 Jewels, since 917s turn up in the same named cases.
Watches that have been tinkered with can be missing small parts like the regulator, or have a loosened set lever screw that lets the stem fall out. Stuck clicks and tired mainsprings are common, and solid gold cases are often dinged around the edges.
Buying guide
For a 921 to carry, we'd buy the 1950 Model 1 titled working in a 14K gold-filled case at $399 delivered, under the band. There are about 13 for sale, and the $575–2,325 band is wide because gold-filled ones ask about $400–760 and 14K solid gold ones $2,000–4,050, where the gold itself explains the ask. Gold filled, even 14K, is a thin layer over base metal, so read the case stamp before paying a solid-gold price, and ask for a movement photo reading 921 and 21 Jewels, since 917s turn up in the same named cases. Check the seller's feedback on the item page, since eBay's pocket watch search doesn't show it.
