Hamilton · 23 jewels · 16s · 1941–1965
Ask the restorer behind Hamilton Chronicles which pocket watch to own if you could only have one, and he'll name the 950 or the 950B. Hamilton introduced the 950B in 1941 to replace the 950, and by then it and the 992B were the only railroad-approved pocket watches Hamilton still made. It has two more jewels than the 992B, and they hold each end of the mainspring barrel arbor. The escape wheel, pallet fork and balance all get cap jewels top and bottom, the center, third and fourth wheels are solid gold, and the plates and bridges are rhodium plated. The usual dial is a heavy gothic enamel with baton hands. In 1951 Hamilton offered it in the 10K gold-filled Model A or the bar-over-crown Model No. 2, which came in solid or filled gold. It stayed in production until 1965, and it sells at a clear premium over a 992B, so ask to see the movement.
The grade
The 950B is the 23-jewel companion to the 21-jewel 992B, made in the same years. It replaced the 950 and 950E in 1941, with a new balance, hairspring, cap jewels and mainspring barrel. Confirm the plate reads 950B and 23 Jewels, and look for gold-colored train wheels in the movement photo.
Enamel dial hairlines are common and pull the value down. A 950B dropped on the balance side can break its balance staff, and green verdigris on the dial washer is a sign it hasn't been serviced in a long time.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1952 950B titled serviced in a 14K white gold-filled Model 6 case at $1,677 delivered, inside the band. There are about 22 for sale and most ask $1,475–2,300 delivered, roughly four times a 992B, with five asking less from $1,056. Pay that premium only after a movement photo shows 950B and 23 Jewels on the plate with gold-colored center, third and fourth wheels, and a serial that dates 1941 to 1965. Check the seller's feedback on the item page, since eBay's pocket watch search doesn't show it.

Our take
Titled 950S, a grade Hamilton never made. The 1951 date and 23 jewels fit a 950B, so confirm it on the top plate. Box and paper per the title.
