Hamilton · 21 jewels · 16s · early 1930s–1940
The 992E bridges the 992 and the 992B. In the early 1930s Hamilton brought out its Elinvar hairspring, a nickel-steel alloy that keeps its springiness as the temperature changes and doesn't rust or magnetize easily, and the 992 fitted with it was marked 992E. Sources date the change anywhere from 1930 to 1934, and the 992E ran until the 992B replaced it in 1940. Otherwise it's the familiar 16-size, 21-jewel, lever-set railroad movement, adjusted to five positions, with the E engraved after the grade number. Hamilton made it in smaller numbers than the 992 or the 992B, so collectors who want one of each generation hunt for them. A Worn & Wound writer was handed one that had belonged to a Virginia railroad engineer, with service marks scratched inside the caseback from every visit to the watchmaker. Look for those marks yourself, since they tell you the watch was kept in working order.
The grade
The 992E sits between the 992 and the 992B. The E means Elinvar, Hamilton's temperature-stable hairspring alloy, and it's still adjusted to five positions like the 992, while the 992B that replaced it in 1940 went to six. Confirm the E is engraved after 992 on the top plate, since a plain 992 is the earlier grade.
Enamel dial hairlines and chips from drops are the usual damage. Like any 90-year-old movement, most need a fresh mainspring and a service, and stuck casebacks are common on watches that haven't been opened in years.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1939 992E titled running in a 10K gold-filled Model 2 case at $507 delivered, about $120 under the band. There are about 36 for sale and most ask $625–1,350 delivered, and the $2,460–3,760 asks titled L@@K, Minty or Military look like one dealer, so we'd leave them alone. A plain 992 is the earlier, cheaper grade, so ask for a movement photo with the E engraved right after 992 and a serial that dates to the 1930s, no later than 1940. Check the seller's feedback on the item page, since eBay's pocket watch search doesn't show it.

The lowest current price, titled 992 Elinvar, but it's an auction with 7 bids and will climb. An Elinvar 992 should be marked 992E, so check for the E on the top plate, and stop below the $507 best-value pick.
