Hamilton · 21 jewels · 16s · 1903–early 1930s
The 992 made Hamilton's name on the railroads. It went into production in 1903 as a 16-size, 21-jewel movement, smaller than the 18-size 940 railroad men had carried, and stayed in the line until the early 1930s, when the Elinvar version took over. Fratello counts more than 600,000 made through 1940, including that later version. By 1912 Hamilton was advertising that almost 56% of trainmen on inspected railroads carried a Hamilton, and a 992 went to Antarctica with Admiral Byrd in 1928. The extra jewels over a 17-jewel grade are cap jewels on the escape wheel and pallet fork. Hamilton set the train jewels in solid gold settings, made the center wheel in solid gold and fitted a goose-neck micro-regulator. Most survivors wear double-sunk enamel dials, and some have the Montgomery dial with every minute numbered. They came lever set or pendant set, and only the lever-set ones were railroad approved.
The grade
The 992 is the original grade of the line. Hamilton fitted its Elinvar hairspring in the early 1930s and marked those movements 992E, and in 1940 the six-position 992B replaced it. Its hunter-case twin is the 993, which was never railroad approved, and pendant-set 992s exist too, so confirm you're getting an open-face, lever-set watch.
The glass enamel dials crack and chip, especially around the dial feet and at 1 o'clock where the set lever sits. After a century most have set mainsprings, and some have glued-in crystals from careless earlier repairs.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1908 992 titled serviced in a gold-filled Model 1 case at $398 delivered, inside the band, or the Montgomery-dial one titled runs great at $456 if you want the dial collectors chase. There are about 181 for sale and most ask $390–500 delivered, and a 992 titled Elinvar is really a 992E. Ask for a movement photo reading 992 and 21 Jewels with no letter after the number, a serial that dates 1903 to the early 1930s, and a set lever beside the dial, since pendant-set 992s weren't railroad approved. Check the seller's feedback on the item page, since eBay's pocket watch search doesn't show it.

Titled 1911, in a salesman's skeleton snap case. Nice for showing the movement, less so for daily carry.
